چکیده

This paper considers an on-line scheduling problem occurred in a service system with two classes (ordinary and special) of customers and two types (dedicated and flexible) of servers. The customers line up with a list according to the order of their arrivals. All customers are assumed to be in the system when service starts and no preemption is allowed. The objective is to complete all services in list as early as possible. We study three classes of service policies that are commonly used in practice and analyze their worst-case performance in terms of makespan. Tight worst-case ratios have been derived for these service policies.

On-line service scheduling

This paper is concerned with a scheduling problem that occurs in service systems, where customers are classified as ‘ordinary’ and ‘special’. Ordinary customers can be served on any service facility, while special customers can be served only on the flexible service facilities. Customers arrive dynamically over time and their needs become known upon arrival. We assume any service, once started,...

Worst-case Analysis of Tandem Queueing Systems Using Network Calculus

In this chapter we show how to derive performance bounds for tandem queueing systems using Network Calculus, a deterministic theory for performance analysis. We introduce the basic concepts of Network Calculus, namely arrival and service curves, and we show how to use them to compute performance bounds in an end-to-end perspective. As an application of the above theory, we evaluate tandems of n...

A Dynamic Fuzzy Expert System Based on Maintenance Indicators for Service Type Selection of Machinery

Due to the multiplicity of standards and complex rules; maintenance, repair and servicing of machinery could be done only by the fully qualified and proficient experts. Since the knowledge of such experts is not available all times, using expert systems can help to improve the maintenance process. To address this need and the uncertainty of the maintenance process indicators, this research prop...

Sikker: A High-Performance Distributed System Architecture for Secure Service-Oriented Computing

In this paper, we present Sikker1, a high-performance distributed system architecture for secure service-oriented computing. Sikker includes a novel service-oriented application model upon which security and isolation policies are derived and enforced. The workhorse of Sikker is a custom network interface controller, called the Network Management Unit (NMU), that enforces Sikker’s security and ...

Beyond Worst-case: A Probabilistic Analysis of Affine Policies in Dynamic Optimization

Affine policies (or control) are widely used as a solution approach in dynamic optimization where computing an optimal adjustable solution is usually intractable. While the worst case performance of affine policies can be significantly bad, the empirical performance is observed to be near-optimal for a large class of problem instances. For instance, in the two-stage dynamic robust optimization ...
